I absolutely adore this photo that my niece took of my son at Christmas several years ago.

The last page uses the kit, the add on pack and the paper set.

This was the photo that inspired the whole collection. It's my husband's kindergarten photo. Isn't he just the cutest thing?????

Out of Bounds

One of the very first things that HOOKED me into DIGITAL SCRAPBOOKING was "out of bounds" scrapping. That's where a little part (or a big part) of the picture comes out of the frame. Maybe it's a secret desire to color outside of the lines that makes this style of scrapping appeal to me so much. I'm sure my kindergarten teacher would NOT approve!

Let's face it though...some pictures simply BEG to have something hanging out! Even the smallest out of bounds detail can add so much to a page. This page is a perfect example. The picture alone is cute but the fact that she appears as if she is starting to climb through the frame causes the page to be that much more engaging...if it's okay to use that term for scrapbook pages.

Here's how I did it. I'm using Photoshop CS5 but any photo editing software that allows for layers would work out fine for out of bounds work.
I start with the photo. Like I said, "Cute photo" but lets have some fun with it.

I pick out my frame that I'm going to want her to "start to climb through". I simply lay the frame over the picture and size the photo so that her hand and the top of her head will be covered.
Then I use my polygon lasso tool to create two new layers copied from the original photo. One is her hand and one is the top of her head. The the layer of her hand includes quite a bit of her forearm and the top of her head includes some of her forehead. This ensures that the frame will be covered. I move them up in my layers list so they are sitting on top of the frame. They do not have to be perfect because I will fine tune these layers in the next step.

Still using the polygon lasso tool, I clip away a lot of what I don't want until I get just a little bit of background left. Then using a small soft eraser tool, I clean up the edges of my two new layers. There are many ways to do this step, the soft eraser just happens to be my favorite. In my opinion, the soft edge actually looks better.

So now it's all cleaned up and the layers are ready to go. They are not quite popping out yet. We need a drop shadow for that.

Using settings similar to this, apply a drop shadow to each layer. You can see now just what I included in my layers. You can also see that I'm lazy and only clean up the edges that I know I'm going to need to. The extra drop shadow gets removed later so it really is no big deal that there's drop shadow hanging out where it doesn't need to be.

Now comes the hard part...just kidding...it really is not that hard. The drop shadow needs to be it's own layer so that it can be manipulated a bit and cleaned up. I do that by clicking my right mouse button on the word "effects" in the layer list for that layer and UP POPS this menu list. Click on Create Layer. You'll likely get some warning about how "some aspects of the Effects can not be reproduced with layers." We don't care, click okay.

Now comes some of that manipulating I was talking about. I love the warp tool for this but I imagine you can use a smudge tool if you don't have warp. The goal is simply to give the bottom of her hand a little more drop shadow than the top because that's how it would be if she were indeed trying to climb out of the photo. I did a wee bit on the top of her head but not much. Keep in mind where your lighting source is. The designers at Digital Scrapbook place use a drop shadow with a direction of 120 degrees. SO...using 120 degrees as my guide, I dragged the drop shadow under her finger tips outward in that direction.

Now comes the drop shadow clean up. I simply use the polygon lasso tool to clip the drop shadow off of the top of the photo. I used the edge of the picture frame as my guide.

And that's how it looks. It might take a couple of tries to get the drop shadow manipulated just right so that it looks real after you've clipped off the extra but it's worth it.

SO here's my photo now. To make it easier when I'm working on the rest of the layout, I group all of these layers together so that nothing gets out of alignment. You could merge them too if you prefer.

For this layout I used my Summer Linen Digital Scrapbook page kit which is available for purchase at Digital Scrapbook Place.

I guess this is my Mr. Ed layout. These are just a few of the horses that can be found at the polo stables in the residential development behind my house. I used my Summer Country Page Kit, Summer Country Add On Pack, and the Summer Country Paper Set.

This is one of my favorite pages. Just simply having his elbow sticking out makes it appear as if his hat is sticking out too. I used Dance of the Dragonfly Page Kit, Dance of the Dragonfly Add on Pack, and Dance of the Dragonfly Paper Set for this page.

She is just too cute. This is a PERFECT example of why out of bounds is so great!! This photo was a lot taller than it was wide. I was NOT going to get her full outfit into that square frame. What a shame that would have been for sure! So I performed a little bit of out of bounds magic on the hat as well as the one boot that she had just a step forward on the floor and made it look as if she were stepping right out of the frame. I used my Rodeo Ready Plopper for this page. Ploppers make pages like this way too easy! The Plopper was made from the Gone Country Page Kit, Gone Country Add on Pack, and the Gone Country Paper Set.

Here's another photo that was not going to fit into a square frame. So I let Grandma sit with her legs hanging out of the frame. She looks lovely, doesn't she? This page can be made up quickly with a Plopper as well. This one is called Imagene Doll. Imagene Doll is a delightful character from three of Lisa Wingate's books. I had so much fun reading about her that I simply HAD to make a line Digital Scrapbook products just for her. She has her own Imagene Doll Page Kit, Imagene Doll Add on Pack, and Imagene Doll Paper Set.

I can NEVER resist a well placed little foot hanging out. This page uses my Just Plain Sweet Page Kit and Just Plain Sweet Add on Pack.

Now, this page looks hard but it really is not. I used my Simply Sweet Plopper and used that same technique but with the entire image. I used the drop shadow effect and then created a layer out of the drop shadow. Then I just skewed the drop shadow so it looked as if she were walking into her shadow. Then I lowered the opacity of both the girl layer and the shadow layer so that the texture and color of the background came through. For the other images, I desaturated all of the colors except for the pink so that the page wasn't so busy with color.

Dandelion Summer

Today is an absolutely PERFECT summer day here in the woods. Brand new to the store at Digital Scrapbook Place is a PERFECT summer day kit.

The name of the kit comes from the title of a book by Lisa Wingate that just came out this month. The book was incredible! It was all about a very unlikely friendship between a poor girl from the wrong side of the tracks and a rather wealthy, but forgotten, old widowed man. They end up taking a road trip through a string of Southern towns trying to unravel a mystery of family secrets. You can read the first couple of chapters of this book HERE at her website.

I absolutely LOVED this book. I said I would not read it all at once. I said I would savor the story and spread it out. I said I had other things that day that I needed to do. LOL--In the end, I ended up reading the book in one day. I even tried to go to bed with about 70 pages to go and actually laid there wondering what was happening in the story so much so that I slipped out of bed just to finish the book!

Just For Today

Okay...Just for today...I'm going to PRETEND that it's not still freezing outside.

I used just the kit for this great page of my son, his friend and more toads.

I used the kit and the add on pack for this page of my grandparents. I love having a print paper on the same background as a light colored paper. It makes layouts like this so easy to do as the picture of my grandfather was placed over a circle of the solid paper. I faded both the edge of the picture and the circle of solid paper. I also lowered the opacity of the picture but clipped and copied just the part of the picture with my grandfather so he would be darker than the rest of the image. I took the ribbon star from the kit and clipped off just the tips which I then arranged under the journaling circle.

I used the kit, the add on pack and the papers to make up this page of my son's first time out in the snow. Oh, my poor baby boy was not a fan of the snow his first time out. He was such a little guy and the snowsuit was designed for a baby so it was awfully hard for him to walk around. To make matters worse, the two different sleds we used to pull him in kept tipping over dumping him into the snow.

I love that envelope! I made it in two parts so that you can easily have things peeking out of it. No worries about that gummed seal on the envelope not being archive quality. It's all digital! Lots of great stuff in this collection!

Daisy Country

It's still cold here in Michigan and it's rather rainy today. What a perfect day to escape to my imaginary world of country living again. In my imagination, it's sunny and warm of course!

Imagene Doll

I guess it's no secret to those who know me that my favorite author happens to be Lisa Wingate. She created a wonderful character, Imagene Doll. Imagene (pronounced I'm-a-jean) is one of the beauty shop babes from Lisa's three Daily Texas books. Talk of the Town happens to be FREE on Kindle right now. In the books, Imagene Doll works at the town diner but can be found next door at the beauty shop most of the time, sharing the town news (and maybe a little gossip) with her gal pals, Donetta and Lucy. She misses her dear husband something fierce and discovers that she has an abundance of time as well as love to share with the people she cares about. This Imagene Doll digital scrapbook page kit is brand new to the store at Digital Scrapbook Place. I love that vintage diner ticket in the kit.

Gone Country

I had the absolute honor of proof reading a manuscript for my girlfriend, Lisa Wingate, last week. It's her 17th book and will be the second book in the Moses Lake series. It was wonderful and took me on a delightful journey south to Texas. With this Michigan winter dragging on, the vacation of the mind was a welcome relief.

The first book in the Moses Lake series is called Larkspur Cove and is in bookstores now. I read that one about a month ago now just prior to it's release. You can read the first two chapters here.

With these two captivating stories fresh in my creative thoughts, I designed the Gone Country collection of digital scrapbook products.

This collection is so versatile. It was incredible easy to come up with several different pages.

Here is a heritage style page that I put together. This lovely couple is my great grandparents, George and Ellie.
This masculine style page features my treasured Grandpa in his boat on Bear Lake.

The way-too-cute star of this page is one of the little boys from across the road. This was taken several years ago. He's a little older now but rest assured, he's still way too cute.

And of course, here is the country that inspired the whole collection. These are some pictures that Lisa sent me of her boys out fishing. Aren't the colors PERFECT???

The sun is trying to shine through the light cloud cover outside. It snowed a little this morning. I never thought the sight of more snow could make me happy but the falling snow means just one thing right now --- it is not so bitter cold outside. It's been so bitter cold lately that it's actually been too cold to snow. Brrrrr.

Okay, so maybe I have been spending a little bit too much time in my imaginary South. Between helping with a graphic for a Southern Fiction Writers' Blog, Listening to Lisa Wingate's Lone Star Cafe (a Texas based book) on tape, and watching a few too many episodes of Designing Woman on You Tube, I've been hiding out in the south which is good because it's cold here in Michigan and it just keeps snowing. Sure....this is pretty but after a while, trust me, it gets old.

I was asked by my fabulous author girlfriend, Lisa Wingate, to come up with a graphic for her new Southern Belle View. She hosts this blog with four other delightful authors of Southern Fiction. Anyway, she said she wanted to have an image to showcase their current books but "could it be wrapped in a bit of lace." Keep it southern, ya know. So I made this for them.

Well, as luck would have it...that inspired a kit. That and all of the other southern escapes that I have found.

I have to say, that lattice is way cool. I made that up while I was keeping my son on task studying his Algebra. It took a full afternoon to digitally weave those laths.

So here's a page I made up with the Anna Belle's Porch digital scrapbook products.

That's my mom in the back and her sister in the foreground. I emailed my aunt this morning with the question of "where was this taken and was the soda pop a treat?" Here is her answer, "It was at a picnic and soda was always a big treat, not just at picnics. We never had it in the house. In fact, one of the first things I remember buying with my own money, from baby sitting, was a 6 pack of coke. And, boy, did I ever watch it closely because it was mine. But I also remember that it didn't taste that good because I was being so selfish, so I shared that last couple of bottle and I never bought it again. LOL!!" My aunt is such a DOLL!

By the way, the brown and the peach paper in the layout come from the AnneBelle's Porch background paper set that will be in the DSP store by next week.

Aren't those great vintage papers??

I love that blue flannel. It reminds me of a chamois shirt that my husband had way back in college before we got married. I was still in high school and stole the shirt from him for several years. He snagged it back and then it disappeared. Imagine my utter surprise when, after we were married and we took a trip to visit his brother in Alaska, the shirt emerged...on his brother! His brother had "borrowed" it when he was home to Michigan for a visit well before we were married. Too funny.

The temperature out side is a balmy 19 degrees Fahrenheit and guess what??? We should see some more of the white stuff. Oh joy.

I think I'll snuggle back into my comfy couch and find more episodes of Designing Women to watch. Too bad I finished that audio book already.

About a Dream

This week's kit was About a Dream. There is a rack at JoAnn Fabrics in their decorating fabric department that I tend to gravitate toward. I would LOVE to do up a guest bedroom in the colors but have run out of guest rooms. So I just made a kit instead.

Here's a layout that I made using these digital scrapbooking products.

Yes, that's me in the photo. This "extraction" is super easy. Here's the cool thing...it's not really and extraction at all. I took the black&white/sepia colored photo of me and laid it over the cream background paper that I have in the add on back. The background of the photo was white. I set the photo layer to darker color and that is what I got. I did go back in and add the cream paper from the kit with the red design over the cream paper but it didn't take but a couple of swooshes of the eraser to the cream with red design paper to get rid of the little bit of red design from showing through the photo. Really, it was super easy. Try out your layer blend options before going through the hassle of extracting an image.

Famous for a Day

So...a couple of weeks ago I submitted a layout to Memory Makers. I discovered yesterday, quite by chance, that Memory Makers has it displayed on their home page and their featured idea gallery page. Too cool! I'm really not sure how this all works so I'm really not sure how big of a deal it is. Since it's my first time and all...I'm going to have to say, "It's a big deal."

I may have to try this out again. It's kind of fun to be famous for a day.

Autumn Days

Autumn Days was the collection for the week. Fall is in the air here and the trees are just starting to turn. I love colors in this collection. The yellows and oranges are what I see in the trees and the blue is from the sky. We've enjoyed some beautiful days this week.

The photos in the page above are from several years ago. I set up the tripod in the driveway to take the pictures.

The photo in the layout above is another from the wedding I went to two weeks ago now. This collection is great for these fall wedding shots.

I love the layout above. Kensington is a metro park near by. We have always enjoyed going there for walks in the fall. I can't believe how little my son is in these pictures.

Tranquillity or Tranquility...does it really matter

So I still don't know how to spell the word. Two l's or one? The webster's online dictionary has two l's in it. Microsoft Word let it slide with two l's but Firefox's auto spell correction claims that there should just be one.

Should I really even care? I'm in awe of what I did. I really wanted to create a collection that was different from what I've been doing. Colors are deeper and richer. Some of the items are things that I've never used before.

OMG---I love that flower! It turned out so good. I nearly hurt my other shoulder just patting myself on the back!

I am really looking forward to seeing how everyone will use the elements in both the kit and the add on pack.

When my husband saw these, he said, "This is our house." Yup, all of the colors here are in our house. He also was a little teary eyed. Not sure if he too was in awe of what I was able to make or whether it was the layout that I did below. I didn't ask because I'm not supposed to notice such things. He's a big ol' softy but shhhhh, don't tell anyone.

So I used just the kit to create this page for my girlfriend's wedding. She absolutely loved the page. I just need to get it framed for her.

September Life Journal

Wow---not even September and I have the life journal page kit ready to go. I really wanted a touch of back to school feel with this kit so I did the ruler frame. The quote of "Measure your own Success" came from a wall hanging that I noticed at my neighbor's house last week Wednesday.

Cute as a Button

As part of an assignment way back in third grade, my son had to interview one person a month and then give a very brief presentation to his class. To make this monthly assignment easier for him and for me, I rounded up all of his grandparents and then recorded my son interviewing all of them. My folks and my husbands folks have always gotten along splendidly so this group interview session was perfect. A question from my son would trigger memories and each parent would have to add upon what was already reminisced about. It's actually quite a treasure to have all of this on tape especially since Zak has already lost one of those treasured grandparents.

During Grandma Loman's portion of the interview, Zak asked her about games that she used to play as a child. She responded with, "Button, Button, Who's got the Button." Imagine Zak and my complete and utter delight when this hand crafted wall art came into the rummage sale at our church two weeks ago. Zak immediately thought we should buy just to remember Grandma. I assured him that we remember Grandma everyday and that we really didn't need this. Then he said, "Well it would make a great kit." That's my boy! Always ready to help his mom with ideas.

Well, he was right, it did make for a great kit. I wasn't so sure about the usability of "Button, Button, Who's got the Button" so I swapped that out for "Cute as a Button" since we all have little cuties in our lives. I did print it on the twill tape as a bit of a tribute to Grandma Loman.

The Work Space

Yes, I finally got off of the couch!

Dan helped me move a bed out of the extra bedroom so that I can use the room as my work space again. I forgot how much I miss looking out this window. BTW---the remaining bed is perfect for "creativity" naps. Yup, had one this afternoon.

Brighton Art Fair

Today was the Brighton Art Fair. Brighton is really my closest town I guess. It's a neat old town with trendy little restaurants, a hair salon, a few antique stores and good variety of other little stores. It really is a neat little down town to walk around. Brighton likes to host several different festivals throughout the year. My favorite is the art festival. Barricades get set up to close down main street through town and all of the vendors set up their tents.

Here are some shots from the day as well as some links to some of my favorite vendors.

The first is Michael Glenn Monroe. He's actually a local resident and has a building in downtown. He used to have a frame shop and gallery but now he just leases the front of the building to a hair salon and leaves the back for himself.

His art is amazing. So amazing that he was asked to paint 1000 Christmas ornaments for George and Laura Bush one year. Here is a link to an article about that. Artist paints his way into the White House.

He is also an illustrator children's books. We have several signed copies of his books. Here is a link to his gallery website, Michael Glenn Monroe and here is the link to the company who publishes the Children's books, Story Time Press.

This guy is truly a nice guy and his wife is just a doll as well!

I love wandering through the tents of the artists who paint. I can't paint...well, I could but I doubt it would be called art. I am always fascinated by the paintings at the art fair.

After spending time under their tent, I really wish I could paint.

Next I came across this lovely Button Lady. Everything in her booth was buttons. I do so love buttons. Check out her website at Black Button Studio.

There are always several booths of photography at the art fair. Since I'm not a very good photographer, I LOVE these booths. I like to try to learn all I can about how the shot is framed. I also enjoy being able to travel to exotic lands or just fascinating locations while never leaving main street.

Dan is a local photographer. I can't say that I've meet him before. I may have...if he was at the show before. He has an online studio at Dan Stuart Photography. Good stuff there.

Okay...this next booth is... hands down one of my favorites. These guys come back every year. They have the Junkyard Dogs and Cats. They come all the way from Louisville just to come to the Brighton Art Fair. Their art is so much fun!! They can be found on the web at Yardbirds

I pretty much got nothing for this picture. I never did stand there long enough to figure out what it was all about. Active art maybe???

There is always live music as well as the local radio station.

I love it when the artists are painting. I could stand there for HOURS and watch them. I wish I could paint like that.

I think I need this fish...maybe?

We did come home with a new spoon rest. The pottery always gets us but we are really trying to get rid of a lot of unnecessary items that cause clutter in our house so we are not about to buy any thing new. A spoon rest is good. We can always use a spoon rest. We bought it from another local merchant, Earth Hand and Wheel.

So now that I'm motivated by art, maybe I can come up with something good myself.

Out Of Bounds

Way back when...long long ago...when I first stumbled upon digital scrapbooking, I tried out something called "out of bounds". It's where part of person or object in the photo hangs out of the photo frame. I was hooked after my first page of this style. It's just sooooo much fun. I finished up this one today using my June Life Journal products.

The power of a Shiny Tiara

To say things have been a little nutty for me lately would be a huge understatement! In the span of six weeks, I’ve been to China, been to urgent care (for myself), and been at my mother’s bed side through a heart valve replacement and the installation of a pacemaker. Then as my luck would have it…as you read this newsletter, I will be serving my community with jury duty.

As I write this, I find myself in the midst of a cluttered house, a scattered mind and a list a mile long. The ceiling fans are circulating the accumulated dog fur around t he room and the dog is curled up against my legs. (Doesn’t she know it’s like an oven in here already?)

So I have this list, a rather long list in fact. Several things can get pushed off to a later date. For example, having clean clothes to wear just doesn’t concern me as I still have plenty of clean pajamas to wear. And it’s not like I’ve run out of kitchen counter space to stack unopened mail. I do however feel the need to create new digital scrapbook products for all of you but it seems as if I am having a bit of a hard time finding that motivating design spirit with in me.

I guess you could say that I’m stuck in a rut. I know we all get there from time to time. Our normal, seemingly endless, supply of creativity dries up like a margarita glass on a hot beach ZAP! We’re left with nothing. What do you do??? Well, for me…the tunes (music) go on and the tiara comes out. That’s right, a Tiara. For most of you, my tiara is no big surprise. My husband bought it for me long ago. I wear it when I pay bills sometimes because it helps me to feel a little more in control of the money that is being drained from our account at rocket speed. I wear it when the men in this house start to forget that this is NOT a fraternity house and that a woman lives here too. And I wear it when my creativity has hit a brick wall as if a bit of BLING is going to channel creative energy.

So the Tiara has been placed upon my head in hopes of a quick return to my happyland of creativity. I know with my fun tunes and my glamorous bling, I will be busting out new digital scrapbook products in no time. I never under-estimate the Power of a Shiny Tiara.

Hmmm…I wonder how successful I’d be at the laundry with this thing on???

Pfft…who needs clean clothes? I have plenty of clean PJ’s!

Oh yeah…jury duty. I’d look awfully silly wearing PJ’s with my tiara.

Flat Grannies in China

Here the Grannies popped out of their safe spot to catch a peek of the airplane on the way there.

This is on the cable car ride up to the Great Wall.

And here they were walking the Great wall with me. What troopers they were, no one made a single complaint about all of the walking.

Here they are lined up for a pictures outside of our room at the Hostel in Beijing.

Here we are in the Forbidden City. Don't we all look like seasoned travelers by now?

Ahhhhh...the hotel in Xi'an was FABULOUS!!!!

What a fun trip it was to have the Flat Grannies along!

Aggravated Photopursification

So I got an official looking document from a lawyer on Friday. It's regarding pending litigation entitled, Graham v. Loman.

Dear Mrs. Loman:

We have been retained by Mrs. Anne Graham for legal representation in the matter of the blatant invasion of privacy recently perpetrated by you; to wit, by your having unlawfully and stealthily obtained a photographic image of our client against her will, the brazenly, and with malice aforethought, having displayed said image on your handbag without having first obtained her prior written consent, to her profound horror and embarrassment.

Please be advised that your action in this matter have constituted an intentional infliction of mental distress on Mrs. Graham; and have resulted, further, in a seriously unlawful violation of her constitutional right to privacy.

And, of ever graver import, is the fact that your action constitute a criminal act under federal Maritime law, as recently interpreted in the U.S. Supreme Court case of Sponge Bob v Squidward, 46 US 10 (2010), which held that a crime of aggravated photopursification is punishable by no less than 30 lashes, and by walking the plank in the parish church parking lot.

On Mrs. Graham's behalf, therefore, we demand that you immediately cease and desist from continuing these unlawful activities, or else suffer the consequences of the Graham family retribution; that is, of having all the air removed from your car's tires in the church parking lot during next Sunday's Mass.

Faileth not at your own peril!

So I guess the moral of the story is don't get caught taking pictures of unwilling people and then putting them on a handbag. Or it could be that I just need to find a different set of friends. I would have thought that having a lawyer for a friend could have helped me.

Trying new things

I remember in the Jetsons that they had video phone. Jane had a mask of herself handy so that she could answer the phone even when she looked less than perfect. Too funny as now that bit of fiction from my childhood seems to be a necessity now.

Yesterday I did a trial run of a live feed of ME. It was entertaining...to me at least. Well, that is until I discovered that I have an old lady neck. The tiny little web cam attached to the laptop does not offer up the most glamorous image of myself. Hence the need for the Jane Jetson video phone mask.

Oh---I could go for Rosie as well. And that machine that automatically made dinner.

I have the coolest boss lady ever at Digital Scrapbook Place. I admire her spunk. Today she offered up this law to live by...she has many.

"Photoshop others as you would have them Photoshop you."

I must agree that this is a good rule to live by for all of us who are known to tweak pictures of ourselves on a regular basis.
